An anal fistula is a small channel that is found between the end of the bowel and the skin near the anus. It occurs as a result of a previous or current anal abscess. Fistula has a tract of two openings – Internal opening into the anal canal and External opening by the skin of the buttocks. If the anal fistula is not cured on time, it may cause a lot of complications Treatment of fistula on time is highly recommended.
The treatment for an anal fistula is very difficult as the infection can be a deep-seated infection. Nowadays, there are two types of treatments available to cure this health problem. The two techniques are video-assisted treatment and the other laser ablation. In the video-assisted technique, a video scope and a probe are inserted to get a clear view of the fistula and treat it accordingly. The laser ablation is also a similar method in which laser beams are used to wipe out the anal fistula. Fistula laser closure or often known as FiLAC is the treatment for the anal fistula In FiLAC, doctors aim at the closure of the tract by the use of laser energy emitted by a radial fiber that is connected to a diode laser. This makes the tissue to contract around the radial fiber that results in closing the tract. Surgery is done under anesthesia and without major cuts and wounds. Some of the advantages of laser technique are:
- It is almost painless.
- It ensures not to harm the surrounding tissue
- The healing time in this technique is very less
- Less bleeding during and after the surgery.
- Least chances of sphincter damage
Although this treatment is a little expensive, doctors recommend laser treatment because it is easy to carry out and the patient’s recovery is fast with least complications
